Toothache and Sensitivity

Toothache and Sensitivity Services
Explained

Toothaches often result from dental issues like cavities, gum disease, or tooth fracture. Sensitivity, conversely, refers to discomfort or pain triggered by specific stimuli, such as hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods. Addressing toothaches and sensitivity promptly is essential to avoid further complications and restore comfort. There are a variety of treatment options available, including:

Endodontic therapy (Root Canal Treatment): Endodontic therapy focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases and conditions affecting the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) and surrounding tissues. A root canal procedure involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection.

  • Oral Surgery for Toothaches and Sensitivity: Oral surgery is typically needed when the dental issue is so severe that the tooth can no longer be salvaged, is way too shaky, or has a serious infection. Some common oral surgery procedures related to toothaches and sensitivity include:
  • Tooth Extraction: Severely decayed, infected, or damaged teeth are removed to alleviate pain and prevent infection, including wisdom teeth often extracted due to impaction.
  • Apicoectomy (Root-End Surgery): If a root canal fails, the root tip and surrounding infected tissue are removed to eliminate infection and save the tooth.
  • Sinus Lift Surgery: This procedure adds bone to the upper jaw to support implants, especially in areas with insufficient bone near the sinuses.
  • Corrective Jaw Surgery: Misaligned jaws or bites are corrected to improve alignment, relieve pain, and restore proper function.

Managing Tooth Sensitivity: Tooth sensitivity can result from various causes, including worn tooth enamel, gum recession, cavities, cracked teeth, or exposed tooth roots. Over-the-counter toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, fluoride treatments, or desensitizing agents may help alleviate discomfort for mild cases.

In more severe cases, endodontic care (like root canals) and oral surgery (such as gum grafting for recession sites) may be required to treat the source of the sensitivity and provide relief effectively.
