If your teeth look very short with a lot of excess gums covering it when smiling (‘gummy smile’), tooth has a fracture below the gum line or tooth is too short for a dental crown, crown lengthening procedure may be indicated. During this procedure, the periodontist will sculpture and remove the excess gum and bone tissue, exposing more of the natural tooth. This will reduce the amount of gums shown and allow a more symmetrical and natural smile. The increase in the tooth height will also allow a proper and defintive restoration, e.g. crown or bridge, to be fabricated.
