Multidisciplinary Approach to Designing a Management Plan

January 17, 2025by Dr Adeline Wong0

True multidisciplinary dentistry looks beyond isolated problems and considers the patient as a whole—integrating physical, emotional, and practical needs into a cohesive management plan.

At The Oral Care Centre, we bring together expertise from various dental specialties to ensure that each patient receives personalised, well-rounded care that aligns with their goals and circumstances.

Multidisciplinary Dental Care: What You See VS What We See

When patients visit us, they often focus on specific concerns such as pain, aesthetics, or functional issues like difficulty chewing. However, these priorities are part of a broader picture that includes dreams of a better smile, fears of procedures, and even time and budget constraints.

Without a multidisciplinary approach, a patient’s perspective—like their fears, hopes, or broader concerns—might be overlooked, with the focus placed solely on the immediate dental issue. We practice multidisciplinary dentistry, understanding that every patient’s journey is unique.

Overall, we see opportunities to create solutions. We combine our professional expertise with your unique perspective to co-design a management plan that prioritises long-term results. We balance factors like education, realistic timelines, affordability, and empowerment to create a clear path toward achieving your dental goals.

Tailored Care Through a Multidisciplinary Approach

Our specialists view every patient as a whole person, seeing what you see and integrating it into a personalised and comprehensive management plan.

Some dental concerns, like toothaches, fractured teeth, lost dentures, or acute gum infections, demand immediate attention. Others, such as crooked teeth, tartar build-up, discolouration, bad breath, or cheek biting, allow for a more flexible timeline. Regardless of the urgency, The Oral Care Centre ensures that every issue is managed with care and compassion, combining expertise across specialties to provide a truly holistic solution.

For a true holistic management plan to be built and customised for you, the clinic needs to –

  • Listen to your concerns and the history of the problem.
  • Examine, investigate, and diagnose the issue.
  • Identify the expertise required to address your needs.
  • Arrange consultations with the appropriate specialists.
  • Collaboratively plan treatment stages, timelines, and clinical milestones.
  • Present a tailored plan to you for review.
  • Discuss and incorporate your concerns, budget, limitations, and role in the plan.
  • Allow a timeout for you to reflect on the proposed plan.
  • Finalize the plan with your input and align with the specialists involved.
  • Set out the final timeline and cost estimates.

In our multidisciplinary clinic, you’re not simply passed from one specialist to another. Instead, an “architect”— prosthodontist, periodontist, orthodontist, paediatric dentist or the last specialist to handle your case—oversees your care, ensuring seamless coordination and follow-up.

We believe holistic treatment is always centered around you, the patient. Together, we build a plan designed not just to treat dental issues but to enhance your overall oral health and confidence for the long term.

Dental Specialties in Multidisciplinary Management

Just as dentistry is a specialized medical field, its many branches can be considered subspecialties. Together, these sub-specialties interconnect to effectively address all aspects of oral health, encompassing physical, physiological, psychological, and pain management dimensions.

The Oral Care Centre brings these fields together to design multidisciplinary management plans tailored to each patient. Here’s an overview of the specialties commonly involved in multidisciplinary dental care:

Paediatric Dentistry

Paediatric dentistry focus on the oral health of children from infancy through adolescence. It also includes special needs patients with congenital, developmental, autism, ADHD, behavioural issues.

  • Introduction to dentistry, motivation, education
  • Development of good oral health & dietary habits.
  • Early detection and prevention of future dental problems

This field of dentistry is important because it is an opportunity to introduce your child to dentistry in a positive way and sets the foundation for good lifelong hygiene habits and dental health. Paediatric dentists are specially trained to care for children’s changing dental needs as they evolve from baby teeth to mixed dentiton and finally to all permanent teeth in teenagers.

Periodontic Dentistry

Periodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of gum diseases and disorders of the tissues that support the teeth, including:

  • Hard tissues like alveolar bone and sinuses.
  • Soft tissues like gums and the mouth lining.

Periodontists are dental professionals trained to manage and treat conditions affecting the gums and surrounding structures. They perform procedures like:

  • Surgical repair, gum recontouring, and regeneration.
  • Precision implant placement for functional and aesthetic restoration.

Periodontic care is vital for individuals susceptible to gum disease, as untreated conditions can rapidly lead to tooth mobility and early loss. Recent studies has also found a link between gum disease and increased the risk of other health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.

Endodontic Dentistry

Endodontic therapy focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the dental pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) and surrounding tissues. When the pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, trauma, or cracks in the tooth, it can cause intense pain. This specialisation is focused on saving natural teeth through:

  • Acute toothache management
  • Determining the extent of breakdown of the tooth, presence of cracks and root fracture, all of which will determine the prognosis of the tooth and how well the tooth can be repaired
  • Root canal therapy to save dead and infected teeth. This involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection.

Orthodontic Dentistry

Orthodontics is a critical part of cosmetic dentistry, focusing on aligning the teeth and jaws to improve both function and aesthetics. This field addresses:

  • Moving, uprighting, repositioning and rearranging teeth with traditional braces & aligners.
  • Improving the bite of the patient
  • Retraining of soft tissue habits in posture and position of tongue and lips
  • Maximising growth potential of the jaw
  • Planning and preparation for jaw surgeries

Orthodontics not only improves the alignment of the teeth but can also enhance facial aesthetics by correcting bite issues and providing a more balanced, symmetrical smile. In addition, well-aligned teeth are easier to clean and maintain, which contributes to overall oral health.

Prosthodontic Dentistry

Restoring oral function and aesthetics through:

  • Fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures.
  • Full-mouth oral rehabilitation with implants.
  • Bite therapy with splints or mouthguards.
  • Aesthetic enhancements like bleaching and veneers.
  • Management of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders and associated pain.

Restorative procedures in cosmetic dentistry not only restore the function of the teeth but also enhance their appearance, ensuring that patients can smile confidently once again.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

This surgical specialty includes:

  • Removal of malaligned, diseased, and nonfunctional teeth via extraction or surgery.
  • Management of dental and oral infections, cysts,
  • Management of abnormal growths/tumours, cancers
  • Removal of non-functional wisdom teeth
  • Oral facial reconstructive surgery

Geriatric Dentistry

Geriatric dentistry addresses concerns for older adults, including those with age-related conditions.

  • Dental care for patients with age-related conditions, such as dementia, osteoporosis, or reduced mobility.
  • Rehabilitation for multiple dental and gum issues.
  • Post-stroke care and collaboration with cancer therapies.
  • Educating caregivers for effective oral health management.

Special Needs Dentistry

Special care dentistry addresses the unique dental needs of individuals who require additional support due to physical, developmental, mental, or medical conditions. This may include:

  • Children and young adults with autism, developmental delays, or behavioral disabilities.
  • Dental treatment for individuals with physical, mental, or multiple disabilities.
  • Oral health programs targeting these groups for lifelong dental care.

Dentists specializing in this field are trained to provide compassionate care and may work in collaboration with other healthcare providers to manage patients’ overall health needs. For example, people with physical disabilities may require adaptive dental equipment, sedation, or modified care techniques to ensure a comfortable and effective treatment experience.

At The Oral Care Centre, we seamlessly integrate these specialties into a collaborative framework, ensuring that every aspect of your dental health is managed by the right experts. Our multidisciplinary approach guarantees that no detail is overlooked, and every treatment plan is designed with your unique needs and goals in mind.
