Scaling and Root Planing / Non-Surgical Gum Treatment
Scaling and root planing is a thorough and meticulous removal of plaque, tartar and deposits from both the superficial tooth surface above the gum line, as well as deep below the gum line to the depth of the periodontal pockets. This treatment is often done under local anaesthesia for maximum patients’ comfort. This process of mechanical debridement helps to reduce the bacterial level and toxins to a level compatible with oral health. Specially designed fine ultrasonic scalers and curettes will be used by the periodontist during this treatment. Most patients often do not need any further active treatment after scaling and root planing. The patients are advised to have regular periodic maintenance therapy to sustain good oral health.
After scaling and root planing, patients will feel significant improvement of the oral health i.e. less gums bleeding, fresher breath, firm and healthy gums. Patients may experience transient sensitivity after this procedure and the dentists will advise on the appropriate effective ways to cope with the sensitivity.
