Gums Services
Explained

Healthy gums support the teeth, protecting the roots and preventing the spread of infection to the rest of the body. Periodontal care focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum diseases, ranging from mild conditions like gingivitis to more severe forms such as periodontitis, which can result in tooth loss if left untreated. Here are the key aspects of gum health care:

Periodontics: Periodontics focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of gum diseases and disorders of the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligaments, and bone. Periodontists are dental professionals trained to manage and treat conditions affecting the gums and surrounding structures with procedures like:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar below the gum line, helping gums reattach to teeth and halting gum disease progression.
  • Advanced tools like the EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master ensure thorough cleaning while being gentle on sensitive gums

Gum Surgery: When gum disease is too advanced or has progressed beyond the point that non-surgical treatments can access and manage, gum surgery may be required to reach deeper to clean more thoroughly.  Though recovery may take time, these surgeries can significantly improve the gums’ health and restore the teeth’ function. There are several types of gum surgery, including:

  • Open Flap Surgery: The gums are lifted to clean deep pockets of tartar and bacteria, then sutured back to reduce pocket depth and support healing.
  • Soft Tissue Grafting: Tissue from the mouth is grafted to cover exposed roots caused by gum recession, preventing further damage.
  • Bone Grafting: Bone grafts regenerate lost bone around teeth, stabilising them and preventing further bone loss.
  • Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR): This procedure is used to encourage the growth of new bone and tissue around the teeth damaged by gum disease.
  • Crown Lengthening: Gum tissue is repositioned to expose more tooth surfaces for a better fitting restoration.
  • Frenectomy: A restrictive frenulum (tongue-tie or lip-tie) is removed to improve speaking, eating, or oral hygiene, benefiting children and adults.

Preventing Gum Disease: Preventing gum disease early, allowing for timely treatment is crucial, as gum disease can not only lead to tooth loss but can also increase the risk of other health complications. Good oral hygiene habits, including brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and visiting a dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings, are essential for maintaining healthy gums.

Healthy habits such as avoiding tobacco, managing stress, and maintaining a balanced diet can further protect your gums.

By prioritizing gum health and seeking early intervention, you can prevent the need for more invasive treatments like gum surgery and ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout your life.
